Journal 4 -- A day with Papa

Sorry it has been so long since I have last written. I can't believe November has come and gone, and with it Thanksgiving. Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner. I have much to be thankful for. Today was a good day...

I spent the morning with my grandfather at his house. My mom and grandmother had an appointment to be at, so Papa and I just stayed at the house. We laughed and talked about music, news, family, and my travels. We watched TV, napped, and read. It was a great morning. We also tried to figure out how to get his new CD player to work so he could play all of his Christmas music (Bing Crosby). When we finally figured it out, he pushed play, and my cd started playing...he just winked and said "Sound familiar?"

I think my favorite part of the morning was when he started telling me some memories from his childhood. He told me about times of war where he had to leave his sweetheart. Where he had to leave home and his childhood. It was so interesting to hear stories from his childhood...cause I only know him as papa--not as a charismatic, fun-loving, young boy. He told me about moving from South Carolina to New York, and then to Maryland for his training in the States. When he was in Maryland, he said he just thought to himself "I don't like it here very much, I want to go home." So, when the military police weren't looking, he jumped on a bus and came home! He was a rebel! Awesome. He went back of course, but it was cool to hear those stories. He went to Belgium, France, and Austria. He crossed the Atlantic by boat. I asked him how long that took...he couldn't remember, but he knew it was a long time.

I regret to say that I have never done that before today. Sat and talked and laughed with my grandfather about his childhood. I whispered a prayer this morning before I went over there...that the Lord would bless our time together, and open my heart. I'm convinced He heard me, and smiled down on us today. I know he blessed me. Thank you Lord, thank you for family and for the simple ways you show your face to me each day. I have this overwhelming sense of joy in my heart right now. I am blessed, very blessed.

I promise to write more often,
Brad
