Journal 8 -- Spring At Last!

I don't know about you, but I'm sure glad that spring is here. Outside of the pollen, I love this time of the year. It's definitely my favorite. It brings the flowers, the warm air, the green grass, and the Masters Tournament to Augusta. I've definitely taken advantage of the weather. I have me a nice "farmers tan" going on right now. I've been playing some golf with friends, fishing with Evan and Reid, and enjoying playing some outdoor concerts. I just love being able to play outside until late in the evening. I'm glad spring is here. Get outside and enjoy the weather, before it gets too hot!

I've also enjoyed traveling around some in the last few weeks. The perks of doing full time music and ministry are wonderful. There are so many blessings that I receive as I travel, sing, and meet people each week. I used to think that record sales, radio hits, press articles, and sell-out concerts would be the motivating things in this business. But the more I travel and meet people, and hear their stories, the more I realize this is about people more than music. I think I've gotten a glimpse of how Jesus ministered when he was here on earth. I don't have the time to share all of the stories I have from the road, but I will share one. I recently visited a class of special education students in Conyers, GA at Heritage High School. My friend Adam, who is a special ed teacher at Heritage, invited me to come and give a private concert to his class. He invited some other classes as well, and we had a wonderful time. I told stories about my family and friends, and told the stories about my songs as I sang them. The students were wonderful and really seemed to enjoy the songs and stories. They told me about themselves and asked me many, many questions about myself. They made me laugh so much...next time you see me you'll have to ask me about them, because they are great!

People like my new friends at Heritage High School are the motivating factors in my ministry. Not how many records I sell or press articles I'm in. Not how many sell-out concerts I play, or which songs get played on the radio. The people I get to meet and the lives I get to be apart of along the way are the motivating things for me. I'm convinced God is concerned with the simpler things in life. How are we showing love to our neighbors, did we tell someone about Jesus this week, and do we love people just the way they are? The rewards come much later I think. Look for God in the simple things this week...
